Eco-Mantra Wins Top Award for Advancing Sustainability in Bali Hospitality

Bali-based Eco-Mantra earned the Environmental Impact Award at the 2026 RICS Southeast Asia Awards for its outstanding sustainability work with Waterbom Bali and other hospitality projects.

Eco-Mantra, a sustainability consultancy rooted in Bali, has recently been honoured with the prestigious Environmental Impact Award at the 2026 Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) Southeast Asia Awards. This accolade highlights the company’s significant contributions to sustainable development within Bali’s hospitality and tourism sectors.

Leading Sustainability in Bali’s Hospitality Scene

Founded in 2015 and based in Ubud, Eco-Mantra has steadily built a reputation for integrating environmental responsibility into hospitality projects from concept to daily operations. With a team of 18 professionals—over 80% of whom are Indonesian—the consultancy has completed more than 120 projects across Southeast Asia, maintaining a strong focus on Bali’s unique ecological and cultural landscape.

Waterbom Bali: A Model for Sustainable Tourism

One of Eco-Mantra’s standout collaborations is with Waterbom Bali, the island’s premier water park. Since 2016, Eco-Mantra has served as the park’s environmental design consultant, helping to shape its sustainability strategy. Their work culminated in 2025 with several impactful projects, including:

  • Comprehensive energy audits and hydrodynamic design improvements for Waterbom’s new Kids Area expansion.
  • Development of an Environmentally Sustainable Design (ESD) concept for a neighbouring 1.48-hectare rainforest-themed lazy river attraction.
  • Ongoing involvement in the park’s Karmic Returns programme, which tracks and reports environmental performance quarterly.

These initiatives have translated into impressive operational results. Despite opening the new Kids Area in 2025, Waterbom Bali managed to send only 0.7% of its waste to landfill, well below its target of 3%. Groundwater consumption was reduced by nearly 29%, saving over 46,000 cubic metres of water, while electricity usage dropped by 8.8%, more than double the park’s original goal.

Commitment to Net Zero and Regional Recognition

Waterbom Bali’s sustainability journey is ambitious, with a commitment to achieve net zero emissions by 2033. It stands as Indonesia’s only tourism business with near-term emissions targets validated by the Science Based Targets initiative. Eco-Mantra’s role in supporting these goals has been instrumental.

Beyond Waterbom, Eco-Mantra’s expertise has been recognised across the region. Two of their projects were shortlisted at the 2026 RICS Southeast Asia Awards, including their work with the Mandarin Oriental Resort Bali, which was also a finalist in the Environmental Impact category.

A Holistic Approach to Sustainability

Co-founder and CEO Maitri Fischer emphasizes that Eco-Mantra’s philosophy goes beyond environmental metrics. The consultancy aims to create value that spans environmental, social, and economic dimensions, ensuring that sustainable design also delivers practical benefits for communities and businesses alike.

For Villa Guests and Long-Stay Visitors

For those choosing to stay in Bali villas or planning extended visits, Eco-Mantra’s work signals a growing trend towards responsible tourism on the island. Many hospitality venues and resorts are adopting similar sustainability practices, making it easier for visitors to enjoy Bali’s natural beauty while supporting eco-conscious initiatives.

Guests can expect more environmentally friendly operations, from water and energy conservation to waste reduction and habitat preservation. Staying informed about these efforts can enrich your Bali experience and encourage mindful travel choices.
